Hosts Small Works Show
Blowing Rock Frameworks & Gallery has spent over two decades displaying the works of a variety of local and regional artists. Focusing mainly on landscape and wildlife themed art, the gallery also specializes in antique paintings of the Hudson River Painter period, specifically North Carolina's prolific Elliott Daingerfield. This summer, August 6th through August 20th, Blowing Rock Frameworks & Gallery will feature "Small Works: A Group Exhibition" in which all the work on display will be 14" x 18" inches and under.
“Blowing Rock Frameworks & Gallery will host a reception for all of the artists participating in the show on Saturday, August 11 from 5 to 8pm.”
Six new pieces of my work will be offered at the show including some produced in egg tempera and others in oil. While I am known for the influence of Andrew Wyeth on my painting style, I am also introducing some wildlife images that represent what has captured my attention this year. I attempt to paint very specific subject matter: beautiful moments of time we rarely stop to appreciate, the simple sentimentality of memories that we so easily overlook.
The Swan at Mayview Lake - oil
Horse and Buggy - egg tempera
Visit From a Bluebird - oil
Fall Foraging - egg tempera
Over the Cattail Pond - oil
Into the Woods - egg tempera
Mark Kelvin Horton, a gallery owner and talented painter in Charleston, South Carolina, well known for his low country marsh scenes, will also be featured. Blowing Rock Frameworks & Gallery has the pleasure of displaying Horton's High Country scenes, farm landscapes, and mountain vistas.
Another artist, Robin Wellner will be on display. Her cool palette and textural plein air paintings create a nice contrast to the more representational artists in the show. Wellner joined the gallery in 2016 and has developed a successful following of collectors.
In contrast to Wellner's abstracted plein air landscapes, Karla Mann's beautiful wildlife paintings will also be featured on the gallery walls. Mann is an internationally recognized wildlife artist, whose detailed animal paintings are practically indistinguishable from reality.
In addition to the artists already mentioned, pieces by Fred Sprock, Dave Syfert, David Starbuck, Lita Gatlin, Edigio Antonaccio, Wes Waugh, Kyle Buckland, and George Snyder, will also be on display.
Questions should be directed to the gallery by calling 828.295.0041 or visit the website, www.blowingrockgalleries.com, to see more examples of the artists work.
Blowing Rock Frameworks & Gallery will host a reception for all of the artists participating in the group show on Saturday, August 11th from 5pm to 8pm.

Representational Art in a New England Town

The pieces I have submitted to the salon reflect a fascination with wildlife, especially birds, and offer a portrait-like presentation that brings the subject close. Viewed in a simple composition, the paintings offer a peaceful way to appreciate the intricate beauty of these fragile creatures, many of whom struggle to survive in a world increasingly used up by man's continued growth and sometimes careless way of treating their surroundings.

As an artist, it is often hard to try and describe your own paintings, especially to characterize your body of work or your style. Writer Allison Malafronte does an excellent job in her short but insightful write-up in a single page of this issue. The online version is an easy read here.
“With so much thought, observation, and reflection behind each piece, it is clear why Drake’s paintings frequently cause viewers to pause.”
Fine Art Connoisseur is available at fine bookstores everywhere, or you can view the article on line.
