Simon Peter’s Despair

Oil painting on panel, 60 x 48 inches

I painted Peter not in the moment of the miracle, but in the moment just before — when all he had left was failure, and a choice.

About this painting

This painting captures Simon Peter at a breaking point—exhausted, ashamed, and empty-handed after a long night of failure. As a skilled fisherman, he had done everything right, yet still came up short. His disappointment wasn’t just physical—it was personal, public, and deeply human.

I focused on the moment just before everything changed—when Jesus asked Simon to try again. It’s a scene of quiet tension, where surrender feels risky and obedience seems unreasonable. We’ve all known that space between exhaustion and breakthrough.

Simon’s story reminds us that failure isn’t the end. When he let down his nets once more, he encountered a miracle—and more importantly, a calling. He left behind the shame and followed the One who could fill every emptiness with purpose.
