New River Fishing Guide

Oxeye Daisies

To prepare for a larger painting in egg tempera, this watercolor sketch was completed as a study. The way the color in the composition provides bands of cool and warm tones makes the layout pleasing to the eye. The deep, dark background under the shaded Blue Spruce tree makes the super white flowers pop out. I like it.

This barn used to be outside of town but is now surrounded by developments and busyness. It still functions to provide a place for a small, family owned farm to keep the winter hay and equipment with enough acreage around it to grow what they need. But it won’t be long before scenes like this disappear.

One Gray Morning

The Canada Goose is often seen along the New River in pairs as they move up and down the waterway stopping every once in a while. The early morning air is punctuated with the sound of their honking as they float quietly over the rising mist above the water.
Egg tempera painting, as old as the Egyptians, was most famous during the Renaissance and the method taught to Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci as young students. The paint is more durable than oil and has unsurpassed luminosity with dozens of layers quickly applied in a single session. The artist makes tempera paint from the yoke of an egg combined with powdered pigments.
