The Artist

Jason Drake is an artist living in North Carolina who creates realist paintings in oil, watercolor, and egg tempera. His art features figurative portrayals that tell a timeless story.

Jason’s work has been exhibited in numerous galleries from Vermont to Charleston and in museums from Montana to Spain. He holds the distinction of winning international awards in all three mediums: oil, watercolor and egg tempera and Fine Art Connoisseur Magazine named him an artist to watch. As an art educator, Jason's highly regarded online course on egg tempera has empowered artists worldwide to master this rare and intricate technique, establishing him as an authority in this specialized niche of the fine art world.

When a painting is so dramatic that it feels like a still image from a movie, you are immediately drawn into a story that stirs your imagination. My compositions in this new series are focused on real people from The Bible who experienced deep emotions and struggles that brought them to a point where time seemed suspended and their lives changed.
Characters in the Bible have personal stories that have stood the test of time but you don’t have to be a Christian believer to find the paintings exciting. They display the depth of humanity that speaks across the ages.
I am painting in oil as it allows me to work on a large canvas and to give deep and vivid color to the picture. I often employ chiaroscuro lighting, the technique of applying high contrast, to direct your eyes to areas of the composition that tell the story and produce a sense of depth to the scene.
My subjects are presented in a detailed and direct way that gives them the feeling of being cinematic. As you stand before one of these paintings you will feel that you are a participant in the drama. The pictures encourage you to place what you see into the context of your own experience.
