To prepare for a larger painting in egg tempera, this watercolor sketch was completed as a study. The way the color in the composition provides bands of cool and warm tones makes the layout pleasing to the eye. The deep, dark background under the shaded Blue Spruce tree makes the super white flowers pop out. I like it.

It still functions to provide a place for a small, family owned farm to keep the winter hay and equipment with enough acreage around it to grow what they need. But it won’t be long before scenes like this disappear.

There is always beauty to observe in nature and sometimes it is small and under your feet as you step. The Forget-Me-Nots grow better in the wild, it seems, and they stand out in stark contrast to the gnarled bark of a maple tree. Holly notices little things like this and points them out so I can enjoy them too….and paint them.

A little racoon can be seen around the barn or on the porch after dark and are usually up to no good. It wasn’t until a neighbor raised a pair of them that I saw how personable and like a pet they can be. Of course, my wife reminded me of the book she read to our children called “Rascal” which illustrated a young boy’s adventures with his pet racoon.

A century ago the mountain church was the center of the social life of a rural community. Couples were married there, departed loved ones were placed in the ground next to family members. Buildings like these are rarely seen and without a coordinated refurbishing effort, most fall into disrepair and disappear. They seem to hold a lot of memories, and remind us of simpler times.
